Writing Prompts That Reflect What Buyers Actually Ask AI
Your AI visibility data is only as good as your prompts. How to build a prompt set that mirrors real buyer questions across the funnel.
AI visibility is always measured against a set of questions. Choose them badly and you'll get precise answers to the wrong question. Here is how to build a prompt set worth tracking.
Start from real language
The best source of prompts is your customers' own words. Look at:
- sales call notes and demo request forms ("we're looking for something that…");
- support tickets and onboarding questions;
- the search terms that already bring you traffic;
- community threads in your niche where people ask for recommendations.
Buyers rarely use your category label. They describe a situation: "an app to send invoices and chase late payments" rather than "accounts receivable automation".
Cover the whole decision
| Stage | Prompt type | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Problem | Problem-led | How do freelancers get clients to pay invoices on time? |
| Discovery | Best-of | What's the best invoicing app for freelancers? |
| Shortlist | Comparison | YourBrand vs Competitor A for a two-person studio |
| Switching | Alternatives | Cheaper alternatives to Competitor A |
| Validation | Brand | Is YourBrand reliable for international clients? |
Add modifiers that matter to your market
Audience ("for nonprofits"), budget ("under $20 a month"), integration ("that works with Shopify"), location ("in Kansas City") and constraints ("without a contract") all change which brands get recommended. Include the ones your buyers actually use.
Keep it measurable
- 10 to 30 prompts per brand is a good range.
- Freeze the wording. Edit only when there's a clear reason, and note when you did.
- Group prompts by stage or theme so you can see where you're strong and weak.
- Mostly unbranded. Unbranded prompts measure recommendation; a few branded prompts measure reputation.
