Getting Cited: What Makes a Page Useful to AI Search Engines

Practical, non-speculative ways to make your pages easier for AI answer engines to retrieve, understand and cite, without tricks or guarantees.

When an answer engine cites a source, it's telling the user "this is where I got that". Being that source puts your site in front of a buyer at the moment of decision. Nobody can guarantee citations, but you can make your pages far easier to use as one.

1. Be reachable

A page that can't be fetched can't be cited. Check three things:

  • robots.txt allows AI search crawlers (see our crawler guide);
  • the page doesn't carry noindex or nosnippet;
  • the main content is in the HTML response, not injected later by JavaScript.

2. Answer a specific question

Retrieval systems match passages to questions. A page that directly addresses "best invoicing app for freelancers" or "how to switch from Competitor A" has a clear job. Generic pages that try to cover everything match nothing particularly well.

3. Put the facts where they can be lifted

  • Lead with a plain one or two sentence summary of what you offer and for whom.
  • Use descriptive headings that read like questions or claims.
  • Present comparisons and specifications in tables and lists.
  • State prices, limits and compatibility explicitly, and keep them current.

4. Show who you are

Clear authorship, an About page, contact details and Organization structured data help any system, and any human, understand who stands behind the content. Consistency matters: your company name, product names and key facts should match everywhere.

5. Be the primary source

Original material, such as your own documentation, pricing, methodology, benchmarks you actually ran, or detailed how-to guides, gives engines something they can't get elsewhere. Thin pages that restate other sites rarely become the cited source.

6. Earn mentions on the sites already being cited

Your own pages are only part of the picture. In most categories, assistants cite a recurring set of review sites, communities and publications. Find out which ones (Citewise AI lists them per run), then work on genuine inclusion: accurate listings, real customer reviews, contributed expertise.

7. Measure the result

Track your citation rate (the share of answers that cite your domain) over several runs, which Citewise AI reports for every run. If a new comparison page starts being cited for comparison prompts, you'll see it. Start with the free AI readiness checker.
